Maldivian waters are a haven for a number of natural marine life, but are most known for their selection of vibrant coral reefs, residence to 5 species of sea turtles, 1100 species of fish, 187 species of corals , 400 species of molluscs, 21 species of whales and dolphins , and 83 species of echinoderm. Many crustacean species are there as well: 120 copepod, 15 amphipod as well as over 145 crab and 48 shrimp species.
Among several other marine families characterized are Fusiliers, Pufferfish, Jackfish, Oriental Sweetlips, Lionfish, reef sharks, Groupers, Snappers, Eels, Batfish, Surgeonfish, Napoleon wrasses, Humphead Wrasse, Triggerfish, Bannerfish, Butterflyfish, Scorpionfish, Lobsters, Nudibranches, Spotted Eagle Rays, Angelfish, Squirrelfish, Soldierfish, Glassfish, Unicornfish, and Barracudas.
